My Car, My Dad Author: AlternatorMan

harleystarter.jpgI just loved working on my father’s car on lazy Sunday afternoons. There in his garage we could talk about anything being together all alone. My dad was a man of hobbies. He like certain things and he became almost fanatical in his appreciation of them.

One of his biggest obsessions was his Harley Davidson. He literally pulled the car from a junk yard before it was about to be crushed. The first thing that he found was that although the car was a wreck, the original Harley Davidson starter could actually be salvaged and fixing up this wonderful bike became our bonding activity for the next few decades. The bike is beautiful now and I will keep it forever.

History of the Starter Author: AlternatorMan

starter.jpgAn automobile self-starter, simply known as a starter is an electric motor that initiates rotational movement in a car’s internal combustion engine before it can power itself.  At the turn of the twentieth century all car auto manufacturers were turning to the internal combustion engine for its many advantages.  The Otto cycle and the Diesel cycle internal combustion engine both required the piston to move before the ignition phase of the cycle.  This means that there must be an external source that set the engine in motion before the engine could power itself.  The original models implemented a hand crank to start the engine!

It was such a dangerous activity that they had to create automobile starters that were mechanized.  This was the beginning of the car starter revolution that has changed auto manufacturing into what it is today.
