How Alternators Became Common Author: AlternatorMan

mopar-alternator-startersalternators.jpgIn 1960, Chrysler introduced the alternator because the increased electrical loads on the charging system of the old generator could no longer provide enough amperage or electrical volume to operate all of the electrical components on the car. A AC Delco alternator is a three phase alternating current (AC) generator that uses three positive and three negative diodes to convert the AC voltage to usable direct DC current voltage.

All the six diodes are can types that were pressed into aluminum frames. They produce a fair amount of heat as the current passes through them while the aluminum frame makes for an efficient heat sink to disperse the heat. This is important as heat and vibration are the worst enemies of electrical components.

Hitachi alternator Author: AlternatorMan

Hitachi alternator

It is a common misconception that the battery provides all the power needed for the car to run. The truth is a battery only gives the engine the necessary energy to jumpstart the car but the main source of energy comes from the fuel. The connection between the fuel tank and the battery is the alternator. Hence, the alternator plays an important role in converting the fuel into electrical energy and generating alternating current, which is then used to keep the car running.Today’s cars are more fuel-efficient but have higher electrical requirements. That is why some alternators, such as the Hitachi alternator, have been designed to accommodate higher electrical loads. Engines have far evolved from the engines of yesteryears and provide a smoother ride. The cars of today make use of computerized technology as well.

Hi output alternators Author: AlternatorMan

Hi output alternators

My car stalled on me one afternoon while I was driving on the outskirts of town. I had no warning and it was scary. It turned out that my alternator was busted, hence, the car’s battery got used up. I never really understood cars.

I learned a lot from that experience. I realized how crucial an alternator is to keep the engine running. After that incident, I never thought twice in choosing hi output alternators for a replacement.

Those Lights Actually Mean Something! Author: AlternatorMan

alt warning lightYou know those little red warning lights on your car’s console that flash on every once-in-a-while? They say things like “check engine”, “check oil”, “tire pressure”, or “ALT”. Those little lights aren’t coming on just for your viewing pleasure—they’re coming on to let you know some kind of maintenance is needed on your vehicle. And, if you’ve avoided that 30,000-mile check or ignored that oil change every three months it’s likely pretty important that you get the lights checked out by an automotive professional.

If your “ALT” light comes on for example, it may mean that the alternator output voltage is lower than the battery voltage. It could also imply that the battery voltage is lower than the alternator output voltage. And, if the “ALT” light dims as you rev up the car’s engine, then your alternator might need work. If the light grows brighter, then the car’s battery could be bad.

I never knew anything about motorcycle starters before I met my boyfriend. He is a huge Harley enthusiast and is always working on his motorcycles. He has two of them; one vintage Harley and a newer Kawasaki. The other day we were headed out for an afternoon ride and the stupid Harley wouldn’t start.

Kawasaki starter

I thought maybe the motorcycle was out of gas or that the battery was dead. But my boyfriend told me that the tank was full and the battery was good. He said it was a problem with the starter. We took the bike over to his friend’s house. This guy was a genius with bike starters and had it fixed in no time.
